MINES BASEBALL SWEPT AT FORT HAYS STATE TO END SEASON

HAYS, Kan. -- The Colorado School of Mines baseball team lost all four of its games at Fort Hays State University’s Larks Park to end its 2004 season. The Tigers won both games of Saturday’s doubleheader, 13-8 and 11-10, and also took the twinbill of Sunday, 15-12 and 16-4.

CSM senior first baseman Adam Marwitz (Denver, Colo./Georgetown) hit .400 (6-15) in the series with three homers and nine runs batted in. He went 2-for-4 in the series opener with a homer and four RBI and was also 2-for-4 with two homers and five RBI in game three.

Marwitz ended the 2004 season on a tear as he hit .419 (18-43) over the last 13 games of the season with 13 runs, 11 homers and 26 runs batted in. He finished the season with team-highs in homers (16) and RBI (56).

Senior shortstop Mike Cerbo (Denver, Colo./Denver South) went 7-for-14 (.500) in the series with a double and four runs batted in, while senior catcher Justin Barberio (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) hit .462 (6-13) with a pair of doubles and drove in four runs on the weekend.

Mines concludes its season at 9-44 overall and 0-28 in conference play.

MINES BASEBALL DROPS PAIR TO MESA STATE

DENVER, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines baseball team lost a pair of games to Mesa State during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Regis Field. The Mavericks took the opener, 6-3, and picked up a 20-2 win in the series finale.

In game one, CSM took a 1-0 lead on Ryan Roth’s solo homer to leftfield in the third inning. However, the Mavericks plated four in the fourth, including a three run homer from Ryan Griep to take the lead and never relinquished it. Mines did cut the lead to 4-3 with single tallies in the fourth and sixth innings, but MSC used a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.

Senior Matt Gilbreath (Mead, Colo./Arvada) took the loss for Mines. He went all seven innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits and struck out 10. Mike King went the distance for the Mavericks, surrendering six hits and three runs to pick up the win.

In game two, Mesa State scored five in the third and eight more in the seventh to earn the win. Griep went 4-for-6 with four RBI and a homer in game two, while CSM senior shortstop Mike Cerbo (Denver, Colo./Denver South) was 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Orediggers.

Nathan Staggs went six innings for the Mavericks, allowing two runs on five hits to pick up the win in the finale.

Mines is slated to conclude its season with a four-game series at Fort Hays State next weekend.

MINES BASEBALL DROPS TWO TO MESA STATE

DENVER, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines baseball team dropped both games of Saturday’s Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader to Mesa State at Regis Field. The Mavericks took the opening game, 13-5 (7 innings) and earned a 14-6 triumph in the nine-inning nightcap.

In game one, Mesa State scored six runs in the second and three in the third to take control of the game. The second game was much of the same as MSC plated four runs in the second and three more in the third in claiming the win.

CSM senior first baseman Adam Marwitz (Denver, Colo./George Washington) had a big day at the plate as he went 3-for-6 with three runs scored, three home runs and nine runs batted in. He was 2-for-4 in the nightcap and drove in all six of the Orediggers runs, including four on an eighth inning grand slam.

Mesa State (36-14, 14-8 RMAC) was led by Jason Crawford in game one as he went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Ryan Griep was 6-for-6 with four runs batted in during the finale.

Jared Ferrans (9-1) picked up the win in the opener as he went all seven innings, allowing eight hits and striking out nine. Jason Martinez pitched seven innings in the nightcap and improved to 10-3 with the win. He surrendered just five hits and struck out 10.

Mines will return to action when it hosts Mesa State for another twinbill on Sunday beginning at 12:00 pm at Regis Field.

MINES BASEBALL SWEPT AT METRO STATE

DENVER, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines baseball team was swept in a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series over the weekend at Metro State’s Auraria Field. The Roadrunners won Friday’s game, 8-2, took both games on Saturday’s doublheader, 6-3 and 14-7, and completed the sweep with a 12-1 win on Sunday.

CSM senior first baseman Adam Marwitz (Denver, Colo./George Washington) had a big series for the Orediggers as he batted .462 (6-13) with three home runs, four runs batted in, a double and four runs scored. He hit a homer in each of the first three games of the series.

Sophomore Ryan Oliver (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) posted a .500 batting average (4-8) and drove in a pair of runs as he saw action in three of the games.

Mines is slated to return to action when it hosts Mesa State for a four-game RMAC series from Apr. 23-25. The series will be played at Regis Field.

MINES BASEBALL LOSES ALL FOUR AT NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS

LAS VEGAS, N.M. -- The Colorado School of Mines baseball team dropped all four games at New Mexico Highlands in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series over the weekend. NMHU swept Friday’s doubleheader, 10-3 and 11-5, and also took both games of Saturday’s twinbill, 21-11 and 3-2.

CSM senior shortstop Mike Cerbo (Denver, Colo./Denver South) had a big series for Mines at the plate. He hit .500 (7-14) with three doubles, five runs and an RBI. He also stole three bases in the series opener.

Senior first baseman Adam Marwitz (Denver, Colo./George Washington) hit .357 (5-14) for the weekend and belted a pair of homers in game three. He finished the weekend with six runs batted in.

Sophomore pitcher Brady Romberg (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) threw his best game of the season in the series finale, but came up one run short. He went the distance, allowing three runs on seven hits and struck out two.

Mines will return to action on Wednesday when it travels to Regis for a 3:30 pm nonconference game.

COLORADO MINES BASEBALL LOSES TWO GAMES TO REGIS

DENVER, Colo. -- The Regis University baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Colorado School of Mines by winning a pair of games in Sunday’s Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader at Regis Field. The Rangers, who also swept a twinbill on Friday, won game one this afternoon, 12-3, and the nightcap, 13-5. Although the games were played at Regis, they officially counted as home games for CSM.

In the opener, Regis scored seven runs in the first and two more in both the second and third innings to assume early control of the game in claiming the win.

James Walker went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs, Scott Richards was 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and a run scored, while Chad Boyd posted a 2-for-5 day at the plate and drove in three runs. Mines freshman catcher John Naccarato (Parker, Colo./Chapparel) went 1-for-3 with two RBI and delivered his third homer of the season in the opener.

Eric Thompson picked up the win for Regis and imroved to 3-1. He went five innings, allowing one run on five hits and struck out four. CSM senior Matt Gilbreath (Mead, Colo./Arvada) went all seven innings for the Orediggers and took the loss (4-4), but only four of the 12 runs he allowed were earned. He finished with five punchouts.

Game two was much of the same as the Rangers (22-11, 8-4 RMAC) plated five in the first and one in the second to take a 6-0 lead. Mines would cut the deficit to 6-5 with two in the third and three more in the fourth, but Regis would answer with four runs in the sixth to take the win.

Walker went 3-for-4 with six runs batted in during the nightcap, while Matt Levering was 3-for-4 with two RBI. The two runs batted in gave him 59 for the season which set a RU single-season record. Regis’ Dave Wyatt picked up the win after firing 1 2/3 innings of relief and allowing just two hits.

CSM senior shortstop Mike Cerbo (Denver, Colo./Denver South) went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Naccarato was 2-for-4 and scored a run.

The Orediggers will return to action from April 9-11 when they play a four-game series at New Mexico Highlands. The first game is slated for Friday at 3:00 pm.

COLORADO MINES BASEBALL LOSES TWO GAMES TO REGIS

DENVER, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines baseball team dropped a pair of games to Regis University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Friday afternoon at Regis Field. The Rangers won game one, 15-1, and took the nightcap, 10-4. Although the games were played at Regis, they officially counted as home games for Mines.

In the opener, the Rangers scored in each inning to cruise to the win. Frederic Carney fired a complete-game to earn the victory and moved to 5-2 on the season. The win was also the 24th of his career which moved him into sole possession of first place on the career wins list at Regis. Carney limited Mines to just four hits, while the run scored was unearned. He struck out eight.

Also in the opener, Regis (20-11, 6-4 RMAC) senior centerfielder Andrew Newton delivered an RBI triple in the first inning which was his 244th career hit that moved him into first place on the career hit list at Regis. He finished the opener 3-for-4 with two runs and three runs batted in.

CSM (9-25, 0-10 RMAC) senior shortstop Mike Cerbo (Denver, Colo./Denver South) drove in the lone run for his team in game one. Junior Kevin Barrett (Lafayette, Colo./Centaurus) lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing 11 runs and 11 hits and took the loss. He fell to 3-6 on the year.

In the finale, the Rangers led 2-0 after four innings and went on to plate four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to claim the win. Mines freshman catcher John Naccarato (Parker, Colo./Chapparel) recorded a solo homer in the fifth, while senior first baseman Adam Marwitz (Denver, Colo./George Washington) added a three-run homer in the sixth.

Ranger starter Clay Tichota went the distance to pick up the win and improve to 5-2. He allowed just four hits and four runs, three earned, while striking out 11. Mines sophomore Brady Romberg (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) took the loss (1-8). He went five innings and surrendered 10 runs, eight earned on 13 hits.

Regis’ Matt Levering drove in a total of seven runs in the twinbill, while Chad Boyd was a combined 5-for-7 at the plate and scored six times.

The two teams are scheduled to continue their four-game series with a single nine-inning game on Saturday afternoon at Regis Field beginning at 12:00 pm.

CSM BASEBALL LOSES FOUR AT NEBRASKA-KEARNEY

KEARNEY, Neb. -- The Colorado School of Mines baseball team fell to 9-23 overall and 0-8 in the conference with four losses at Nebraska-Kearney in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action over the weekend at Memorial Field. UNK won the opener, 10-6 on Friday, and also took Saturday’s single game, 9-4. The Lopers then completed the sweep by winning both games of Sunday’s doubleheader, 8-5 and 7-3.

In the opener, UNK struck for three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to turn a 3-1 deficit into the win. CSM senior first baseman Adam Marwitz (Denver, Colo./George Washington) went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two doubles.

Game two was the same story. After CSM plated a run in the top of the third to take a 4-2 lead, the Lopers responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning as Mines committed three errors.

Game three saw the Orediggers trailing 7-0 heading into the sixth inning. But Mines would tally three in the sixth and two more in the seventh as its rally fell short. Senior leftfielder Justin Barberio (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) and sophomore pinch hitter Matt Fritzinger (San Antonio, Texas/Central Catholic) each delivered two-run singles.

The finale saw UNK score five runs in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie and claim the series sweep. Barberio recorded the lone RBI for Mines as the team was limited to just three hits.

CSM will return to action this weekend when it travels to Regis for a four-game series. The first game is slated for Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm.

MINES BASEBALL FALLS TO COLORADO STATE-PUEBLO, 15-0

LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- The fourth-ranked Colorado State-Pueblo baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Colorado School of Mines with a 15-0 win at Coca Cola All Star Park in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Sunday afternoon.

Matt York pitched a complete-game shutout and improved to 6-0 with the win. He limited Mines to just four hits, while striking out six and walking just one.

The Thunderwolves claimed a 3-0 lead after three innings and erupted for nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings to assume control of the game.

CSM junior second baseman Matt Fritzinger (San Antonio, Texas/Central Catholic) had to of his teams four hits and finished 2-for-3. Senior pinch hitter Kevin Baird (LaJunta, Colo./LaJunta) and junior third baseman Steven Krier (Sterling, Colo./Sterling) each produced one hit on the afternoon.

CSU-Pueblo (23-1-1, 4-0 RMAC) received a 3-for-4 performance at the plate from Mike Massaro. He delivered two triples, scored three times and drove in one. Danny Cummins went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs and Sergio Cordova was 2-for-4 with a homer, three runs and drove in two.

Mines junior Matt Gilbreath (Mead, Colo./Arvada) took the loss and fell to 4-2 on the season.

The Orediggers (9-18, 0-4 RMAC) will return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Metro State for a 3:30 pm nonconference game.

MINES BASEBALL FALLS TO COLORADO STATE-PUEBLO, 18-4

LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- The fourth-ranked Colorado State-Pueblo baseball team pounded out 27 hits en route to an 18-4 victory over Colorado School of Mines in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Coca Cola All Star Park. After winning the first two games of the series on Friday, the Thunderwolves will go for a four-game sweep in the series finale on Sunday afternoon beginning at 12:00 pm at All Star Park.

CSU-Pueblo scored four runs in the first, only to see Mines cut the lead in half as senior rightfielder Justin Barberio (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) laced a two-out, two-run double to right center.

However, the Thunderwolves would add four in the fourth, five more in the fifth and three in the seventh to assume control of the game. Sergio Cordova recorded a three-run homer in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth to highlight the offensive outburst. He finished the day 3-for-5 with three runs and drove in five.

Mines (9-17, 0-3 RMAC) received a 2-for-4 performance and one RBI from senior first baseman Adam Marwitz (Denver, Colo./George Washington).

Shawn Martinez pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits and struck out five. He improved to 4-0 on the season, while CSM senior Kevin Barrett (Lafayette, Colo./Centaurus) took the loss and slipped to 3-3.

MINES BASEBALL FALLS TWICE TO COLORADO STATE-PUEBLO

LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines baseball team opened its conference slate with a pair of tight losses to fourth-ranked Colorado State-Pueblo in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at Coca Cola All Star Park. CSU-Pueblo pulled out an 8-4 win in nine innings in game one and held on for a 7-6 victory in the finale.

In the opener the Thunderwolves struck for three runs in the third as Danny Cummins delivered a three-run triple to deep centerfield. However, Mines would rally with three tallies in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single from sophomore first baseman Ryan Oliver (Littleton, Colo./Heritage).

After CSU-P scored a run in the sixth on a suicide squeeze by Vincente Ramirez, the Orediggers came back to tie the game with a run in the seventh off Thunderwolf All-American closer Don Clement. Neither team could muster a run in the seventh or eighth innings and Colorado State-Pueblo erupted for four in the top half of the ninth and Clement retired Mines in the ninth to earn the win and move to 3-0 this season.

In the nightcap, CSU-P used solo homers in the first by Tony Wittmus and Danny Cummins and a two-run homer from Cummins in the third to take an early 4-2 lead.

The Thunderwolves claimed a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, but Mines used three hits and two Thunderwolf errors to score three runs in the seventh before Clement got CSM freshman catcher John Naccarato (Parker, Colo./Chapperal) to line out to second base for the final out.

Oliver finished the twinbill 3-for-6 with a run and two RBI, while junior second baseman Matt Fritzinger (San Antonio, Texas/Central Catholic) drove in two runs in the opener.

Mines (9-16, 0-2 RMAC) will again hosts Colorado State-Pueblo (21-1-1, 2-0 RMAC) tomorrow for a single game beginning at 2:30 pm at All Star Park.

MINES BASEBALL WINS ONE OF FOUR AT NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS

LAS VEGAS, N.M. -- The Colorado School of Mines baseball team opened its spring break trip by going 1-3 in a four game, nonconference series with at New Mexico Highlands’ Brandt Field on Sunday and Monday. Mines won the opener, 4-1, before dropping Sunday’s second game, 21-4. CSM also lost both games in Monday’s twinbill, 25-7 and 8-7.

In the series opener, the Orediggers rode the arm of senior Matt Gilbreath (Mead, Colo./Arvada) to the win. Gilbreath pitched a complete game, five hitter and allowed just one run, while striking out five. Junior third baseman Steven Krier (Sterling, Colo./Sterling) added a two run homer and junior designated hitter Tommy Harris (Littleton, Colo./Columbine) and freshman catcher John Naccarato (Parker, Colo./Chapparel) each notched RBI singles in the fifth inning.

Highlands (9-12) then opened game two with 16 runs over the first three innings and followed that with 20 runs over the first three innings of Monday’s first game in cruising to easy wins.

NMHU tallied five runs in the first inning of the series finale and held on for the win as Mines scored two runs in the top of the seventh to slice the lead to 8-7 on an RBI double from pinch hitter Matt Fritzinger (San Antonio, Texas/Central Catholic). However Carlos Aguilar got Harris to ground out to short to end the game and pick up the save.

CSM (9-11) will return to action on Tuesday afternoon when it plays at Abilene Christian beginning at 1:00 pm.

CSM BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH HASTINGS

DENVER, Colo. -- Colorado School of Mines senior second baseman Kevin Baird (LaJunta, Colo./LaJunta) went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and scored two runs to lead the Orediggers to a 13-4 victory in game one of Sunday’s nonconference doubleheader with Hastings College at Regis Field. Hastings avoided a four-game series sweep with a 10-8 win in the series finale this afternoon.

In game one, Mines struck for eight runs over the first two innings on eight hits. Baird registered a two-run single in the second inning. After the Broncos scored three in the third to make the score 8-4, Mines responded with a run in the fifth and four more in the sixth to cruise to the victory. Baird added another RBI single in the sixth.

Senior shortstop Mike Cerbo (Denver, Colo./Denver South) finished game one by going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, as eight of the nine batters registered at least one hit and seven of the batters recorded at least one RBI.

Senior Kevin Barrett (Lafayette, Colo./Centaurus) went the distance, allowing six hits and four runs and picked up the win to move to 3-1 this season. Simon McKenzie lasted just 1 1/3 innings and took the loss.

In the nightcap, Hastings raced out to a 6-2 lead after four innings, but Mines rallied with two in the fifth and one in the sixth to slice the lead to 6-5. However, the Broncos took advantage of poor Oredigger relief to put four runs on the board in the seventh and hold on for the win, despite a two-run homer from CSM junior second baseman Matt Fritzinger (San Antonio, Texas/Central Catholic).

Senior rightfielder Justin Barberio (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in game two.

Mines (8-8) will return to action on Sunday when it travels to New Mexico Highlands for two nonconference games beginning at 12:00 pm. The teams will also play a single game on Monday at 12:00 pm.

MINES BASEBALL SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER FROM HASTINGS

DENVER, Colo. -- Colorado School of Mines senior shortstop Mike Cerbo (Denver, Colo./Denver South) hit a game-winning one out, RBI double to lift the Orediggers to a 5-4 victory over Hastings College in game one of today’s nonconference doubleheader at Regis Field. Mines earned a 7-4 victory in game two to get the sweep.

In the opener, Hastings claimed a 4-0 lead after five innings, thanks in large part to a two-run homer by Kyle Oakeson in the first and a solo shot from Shane Totten in the third. However, the Orediggers rallied with two runs in the sixth and tied the game in the seventh when senior first baseman Adam Marwitz (Denver, Colo./George Washington) belted a two-run homer with one out.

Senior Matt Gilbreath (Mead, Colo./Arvada), who went the distance to pick up the win and moved to 3-1 on the season, then retired the Broncos in order in the top of the eighth and Cerbo hit the game-winning double with one out to score senior centerfielder Brent Whitcomb (Aurora, Colo./Hinkley) who had reached on a bunt.

In the nightcap, the Orediggers scored four runs in the first two innings and added three more in the sixth, including a two-run single from Marwitz to claim the win. Sophomore Brady Romberg (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) pitched five innings and earned his first win of the season (1-3), while senior Justin Barberio (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) got the last six outs to pick up his first save.

Barberio worked out no out, bases loaded jams in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Marwitz finished the day 5-for-8 with three runs and four RBI, while Whitcomb was 3-for-7 with four runs and an RBI.

The same two teams will wrap up their four game series on Sunday with a pair of games at Regis. First pitch is slated for 11:00 am.

MINES BASEBALL DROPS FOUR OVER THE WEEKEND

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines baseball team dropped all four of its games over the weekend at Mesa State’s Suplizio Field in the Mesa State Maverick Tournament. On Saturday, the Orediggers fell, 13-12, to Central Washington and 17-4 to the host Mavericks. On Sunday, Mines opened with a 10-7 loss to Central Washington before losing to Mesa, 30-1, to conclude the two-day event.

In the opener on Saturday, Mines spotted CWU a 7-2 lead after five innings. CSM would rally to score 10 runs over the final four innings, but the Wildcats posted three more runs in the seventh and eighth innings to hold on for the win. CSM senior centerfielder Brent Whitcomb (Aurora, Colo./Hinkley) went 3-for-3 with three runs, four RBI and a pair of doubles in the loss.

In game two, the Mavericks used eight runs in the sixth to pull away for the win. Whitcomb again led the way as he went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

In game three, CSM senior righthander Kevin Barrett (Lafayette, Colo./Centaurus) had a no hitter through three innings as the Orediggers jumped out to a 7-0 lead. But the Wildcats used five home runs and 10 tallies in three innings to earn their second straight win over Mines. Junior third baseman Steven Krier (Sterling, Colo./Sterling) went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.

In the four game set, Whitcomb finished 7-for-13 with six runs scored and six RBI, while senior shortstop Mike Cerbo (Denver, Colo./South) went 7-for-15 with two runs and two runs batted in.

Mines (5-7) will be back in action this weekend when it plays a four-game nonconference series against Hastings at Regis University’s Regis Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm on Saturday and 11:00 am on Sunday.

MINES BASEBALL SWEEPS TWINBILL FROM MIDLAND LUTHERAN

DENVER, Colo. -- Colorado School of Mines senior pitcher Matt Gilbreath (Mead, Colo./Arvada) pitched a complete game, four-hit shutout and struck out seven to help lead the Orediggers to a 5-0 victory in game one and contribute to a sweep of Sunday afternoon’s nonconference doubleheader against Midland Lutheran at Regis Field. Mines won game two, 8-4.

In the opener, Midland Lutheran’s Ryan Kelly retired the first 10 Orediggers in order before CSM’s bats began to warm up. Mines would go on to strike for one run in the fourth and fifth innings and three more in the sixth. Senior centerfielder Brent Whitcomb (Aurora, Colo./Hinkley) drove in three runs in the opener. Gilbreath improved to 2-0 this season with the win.

In the series finale, senior first baseman Adam Marwitz (Denver, Colo./George Washington) highlighted a six run second inning with a three-run triple and finished with four RBI to pace the Oredigger offense. Sophomore lefthander Ryan Oliver (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) picked up the win and moved to 1-1 on the season. He went the distance and gave up four runs, two earned, on seven hits. Oliver struck out four.

Mines will return to action next weekend when it travels to Grand Junction, Colo. On Saturday, CSM will play Central Washington at 10:00 am and Mesa State at 1:00 pm. On Sunday, the Orediggers will again play Central Washington at 10:00 am and Mesa State at 4:00 pm.

MINES BASEBALL SPLITS TWO WITH MIDLAND LUTHERAN

DENVER, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines baseball split a nonconference doubleheader with Midland Lutheran on Saturday afternoon at Regis Field. The Orediggers won game one, 9-8, before dropping the second contest, 12-8.

In the opener, Mines junior designated hitter Tommy Harris (Littleton, Colo./Columbine) recorded a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh that drove in the game winning run. The Orediggers led, 7-3 after three innings, but saw the Warriors use a three-run homer by Matt Krickbaum in the fourth to pull MLC to within one (7-6). After Mines scored a run in the sixth, Lutheran tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, setting up Harris’ heroics.

Junior pitcher Kevin Barrett (Lafayette, Colo./Centaurus) picked up the win by pitching a complete game. He allowed three earned runs and struck out four.

In Saturday’s second game, Midland Lutheran scored seven runs in the fourth and held on for the win.

Senior rightfielder Justin Barberio (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) finished the day with two hits and three runs batted in.

The two teams are slated to play another twinbill on Sunday beginning at 11:00 am at Regis Field.

COLORADO MINES BASEBALL DROPS TWO OF THREE TO YORK

ARVADA, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines baseball team dropped two of three games to York College in a nonconference tripleheader on Sunday at Arvada High School. CSM won game one, 7-5, before the Panthers earned wins of 12-6 and 11-4 in the final two games. The teams ended up splitting their season opening four game series with Mines taking a 9-8 win Saturday afternoon.

In today’s opener, the Orediggers broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the sixth with two runs and freshman pitcher Chase Downs (Lindsay, Mont.) retired York in the seventh to earn his first career save. Senior shortstop Mike Cerbo (Denver, Colo./Denver South) went 3-for-3 with two runs.

In game two, York struck for four runs in the first, two more in the third and three in the fourth to claim the win. C.J. Prutch allowed five runs, three earned, in six innings to pick up the win.

In the finale, the Panthers struck for three runs in the fifth and sixth innings and five more in the seventh, highlighted by a grand slam from Jason Wunder, in cruising to the win. CSM junior designated hitter Tommy Harris (Littleton, Colo./Columbine) and senior centerfielder Brent Whitcomb (Aurora, Colo./Hinkley) pounded out two hits apiece.

Mines is slated to host Midland Lutheran for a four game series at Regis next weekend. Games on Saturday are slated for 12:00 pm, while first pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 11:00 am at Ranger Field.

COLORADO MINES BASEBALL TOPS YORK, 9-8, IN SEASON OPENER

ARVADA, Colo. -- Colorado Mines junior desigated hitter Tommy Harris (Littleton, Colo./Columbine) hit a game-winning, two out, solo home run and senior pitcher Matt Gilbreath (Mead, Colo./Arvada) pitched a complete game and struck out a career-best 14 batters to lift the Orediggers to a 9-8 win over York in the 2004 season opener Saturday afternoon at Arvada High School.

York (0-1) took an early 5-0 lead with two runs in the first and three more in the second, but Mines would put four on the board in the bottom of the second highlighted by a two-run double from senior shortstop Mike Cerbo (Denver, Colo./South).

Mines (1-0) would take a 7-5 lead in the fourth when senior first baseman Adam Marwitz (Denver, Colo./George Washington) belted a three-run homer. However, Cory Munoz hit a three run homer to give the Panthers the lead again (8-7) the very next inning.

CSM junior leftfielder Ryan Roth (Hesston, Kan.) delivered an RBI single in the fifth to knot the game at 8-8 and set up Harris’ heroics.

Cerbo finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Kevin Fry went 2-for-3 with two runs and three driven in for York. Chris Starr took the loss for the Panthers as he pitched the last two innings in relief, giving up two runs.

The two teams are scheduled to play a tripleheader on Sunday at Arvada High School. First pitch is slated for 10:00 am.
