MARTY HEATON
ASSOCIATE HEAD FOOTBALL COACH / DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Marty Heaton is in his second year as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator with the Colorado School of Mines football program. Before his arrival at CSM, Heaton spent the six seasons at Adams State College as the Grizzlies assistant head coach and defensive coordinator.

In 2006, Heaton's defense finished second in the RMAC in with 31 sacks, including four from Hunter Wardlaw and a team-most six from Marin Richardson. Wardlaw garnered Honorable Mention All-RMAC and NFF Honorable Mention All-Colorado accolades a season ago while posting team-highs in tackles (94) and tackles for a loss (7.5). Richardson, who earned NFF Second Team All-Colorado honors last year, registered 62 tackles and 6.5 tackles for a loss in 2006.

At Adams State, Heaton's defense led the RMAC in total defense, pass defense and sacks in 2003. In 2004, the Grizzlies were ranked at the top of nearly every defensive category in the RMAC and were named the NCAA Division II Defense of the Year by the College Sports Report. In addition, the ASC defense finished the 2004 season ranked eighth in the nation in scoring defense, 11th in pass efficiency defense, 12th in total defense and 15th in rushing defense.

In 2005, Heaton’s defense led the RMAC in pass defense, total defense, pass efficiency defense, sacks and opponent first downs. It also ranked 27th in NCAA Division II in total defense and 35th in rushing defense.

Heaton guided several All-RMAC and All-Region players at Adams State, including three-time All-American and two-time RMAC Defensive Player of the Year Adam McGurk. ASC's Charles Allgood, a 2004 All-American and Cactus Bowl participant, as well as 2005 RMAC Defensive Lineman of the Year Ernesto Villasenor, also flourished under Heaton.

Prior to his arrival at Adams State College, Heaton was a highly successful prep coach. From 1996-99, he served as the head coach at ThunderRidge High School and led the 1999 squad to an 11-1 mark, a 4A Prairie League Championship and a trip to the state quarterfinals.

Heaton was also the head coach at Highlands Ranch High School from 1987-96 and guided his teams to three league championships and four state playoff appearances. From 1981-87, Heaton served as the defensive coordinator at Skyline High School and helped guide the 1986 squad to the 3A State Championship, as well as berths in the 1984 and 1985 state semifinals.

Heaton is a 1981 graduate of Adams State College and holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Education, as well as a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Colorado at Denver (1994). Heaton was a two-time all-conference selection and team captain during his playing days (defensive back) and was voted as the team’s most inspirational player. In addition, he was voted to the Academic All-District and All-America Teams.

Heaton and his wife, Cathy, have two children, Rachel, 14, and Jacob, 13.
