CU-COLORADO SPRINGS WINS NCAA DIVISION II NORTHWEST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP; NICHOLAS BABL OF UCCS CLAIMS INDIVIDUAL TITLE IN PLAYOFF LITTLETON, Colo. The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs earned an automatic berth to the 2003 NCAA Division II Mens Golf National Championships by winning the Northwest Regional Title on Wednesday afternoon at The Meadows Golf Course. The Mountain Lions finished with a 54-hole total of 871 (290-288-293). Nebraska-Kearney placed second (884) and was followed by Adams State (894), Fort Lewis (909), Minnesota State Mankato (915), Southern Colorado (918), South Dakota State (937) and Northern Colorado (944). Nicholas Babl of UCCS won the individual title as he birdied the third playoff hole to defeat Jeremy Lederer of Fort Lewis. Both Babl (71-74-69) and Lederer (69-72-73) were tied at two-under par 214 after 54 holes before Babl won the title on the third playoff hole. Jon Olson and Mark Hocking of UCCS tied for third place with even par 216, while Chris Shives of Adams State was one over par (217) for the tournament and claimed fifth place. CU-COLORADO SPRINGS MAINTAINS LEAD AFTER SECOND ROUND
OF NCAA DIVISION II NORTHWEST LITTLETON, Colo. The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs remains in the lead after the second of three 18 hole rounds at the 2003 NCAA Division II Northwest Regional Tournament. The Mountain Lions, who shot a first round 290, recorded a 288 on Tuesday at The Meadows Golf Course for a total of 578 heading into tomorrows final round. UCCS currently claims a seven shot lead over second place Nebraska-Kearney (584) and an 11 stroke advantage over third place Adams State who followed Mondays 303 with the low team round of the day on Tuesday (286) to stand at 589. Fort Lewis is in fourth (601), followed by Southern Colorado (602), Minnesota State Mankato (613), South Dakota State (617) and Northern Colorado (625). In the individual race, Jon Olson of UCCS and Jeremy Lederer of Fort Lewis followed yesterdays 69s with 72s in round two and are in a three way tie with Josh Koschke of Southern Colorado. Koschke followed yesterdays round of 70 with a 71 today and is tied for the lead at 141. Chris Shives of Adams State is one stroke back after posting rounds of 73 and 69. The regional championships will conclude with an 18-hole round at The Meadows on Wednesday. The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs claims a one-shot lead after the opening round of the 2003 NCAA Division II Northwest Regional Tournament which began on Monday morning at The Meadows Golf Course. UCCS shot a two-over par 290 to open the 54-hole event and currently holds a one-shot lead over Nebraska-Kearney (291). Adams State and Fort Lewis are tied for third place at 303, Minnesota State-Mankato is fifth at 305, while Southern Colorado (306), South Dakota State (312) and Northern Colorado (322) round out the eight team field. Jon Olsen of UCCS and Jeremy Lederer of Fort Lewis each fired three under par, 69, and are tied for the individual lead. Cole Nondorf of Fort Hays, Kyle Nuss of Nebraska-Kearney and Josh Koschke of Southern Colorado each shot 70 and are one back, while Nicholas Babl of UCCS was the sixth player to break par on the opening day as he shot 71. A total of 20 individuals are within five shots of the lead. The tournament with continue with an 18 hole round at The Meadows on Tuesday morning. The first tee time is slated for 8:00 am. |
