MINES SOFTBALL SPLITS TWO WITH ADAMS STATE

GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines softball team split a pair of games with Adams State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Sunday afternoon at CSM Field. The Grizzlies won the opener, 5-4, but Mines rebounded to win the series finale, 3-1, and wound up taking three of four games over the weekend.

In game one, the Grizzlies took a 2-0 lead after the first on a two-run homer from Kira Zeiter. After Mines tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the second inning, ASC took a 5-2 lead with three more tallies in the third inning highlighted by a two-run double from Zeiter.

Senior Melanie Mahoney (Erie, Colo./Colorado State) took the loss and fell to 11-6 this year, while Amy Cousin earned the win (2-7).

Mines (17-10, 6-6 RMAC) tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning, but could not score the tying run.

In the series finale, senior pitcher Kim Kilmer (Stoneham, Colo./Prairie) moved her record to 4-4 on the season by pitching a complete-game, five hitter. CSM jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning and after ASC cut the deficit to 2-1 with a run in the fifth, CSM sophomore third baseman Brianne Brennan (Grand Junction, Colo./Central) gave her squad a 3-1 lead with her second homer of the season.

Cousin took the loss after giving up both runs in the first inning and fell to 2-8 this year.

CSM freshman outfielder Melissa Stratton (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) turned in a 4-for-7 day at the plate with two runs scored

The Orediggers are slated to return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Regis for an RMAC doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm.
