MINES SOFTBALL SWEEPS COLORADO COLLEGE

GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines senior pitcher Melanie Mahoney (Erie, Colo./Colorado State) threw a five-inning perfect game to lead Mines to an 8-0 win over Colorado College in game one of their nonconference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at CSM Field. The Orediggers completed the sweep with an 11-3 win in game two.

Mahoney, now 2-0 with a 0.00 earned run average this season, struck out eight.

CSM (3-1) took a 6-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a grand slam homer by junior centerfielder Brittany McKenzie (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo South). That was all Mahoney needed in game one. Sophomore third baseman Brianne Brennan (Grand Junction, Colo./Central) drove in two runs for Mines.

In the finale, Mines plated four in the second and four more in the fourth to claim the sweep. Freshman catcher Rissa Laubhan (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) delivered a three-run homer to centerfield, while Brennan and Mahoney drove in two runs each.

Freshman Danika Johnson (Westminster, Colo./Standley Lake) moved to 1-1 on the year as she threw a six-hitter to earn the win.

The two teams will play another doubleheader at Colorado College beginning at 11:00 am Sunday.
