MINES SOFTBALL SQUAD BLANKS FORT HAYS TWICE

HAYS, Kan. - Colorado School of Mines senior pitcher Melanie Mahoney (Erie, Colo./Colorado State) threw a pair of complete-games and limited Fort Hays State to six hits in two games to lead Mines to a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.

The Orediggers (19-19, 8-14 RMAC) won both games, 1-0.

In the opener, Mahoney allowed just four hits and fanned five, while junior centerfielder Brittany McKenzie (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo South) delivered an RBI double in the fourth inning for the lone run of the game.

In the nightcap, Mahoney limited the Tigers (19-21, 14-12) to just two hits and fanned three as she improved to 13-11 this season with her 17th and 18th complete games of the year.

Mahoney also aided her own cause at the plate with an RBI single in the sixth to score freshman rightfielder Melissa Stratton (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill). Stratton finished the twinbill a combined 4-for-7 at the plate.

Mines will finish its four-game series at FHSU on Sunday with another doubleheader. The first game is slated to begin at 11:00 am.
