MINES SOFTBALL SQUAD FALLS TWICE AT FORT HAYS STATE HAYS, Kan. - The Colorado School of Mines softball team dropped a pair of games at Fort Hays State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Sunday afternoon at Tiger Stadium. FHSU won the opener, 2-1, and the nightcap, 4-1. Combined with the Orediggers' two 1-0 wins on Saturday, the teams split their four-game weekend series. In today's opener, the Tigers used three Mines errors in the bottom of the seventh to score the winning run with two outs. Senior Melanie Mahoney (Erie, Colo./Colorado State) took the loss and fell to 13-12 despite allowing just six hits and two runs, one earned. She also struck out two. The Orediggers were limited to just four hits in the opener as four different players recorded one hit apiece. In game two, FHSU (21-21, 16-12 RMAC) plated a pair of runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to claim the win. Senior Kelly Hayes (Golden, Colo./Golden) went 3-for-4 with a run, while freshman shortstop Stacie LaRocque (Erie, Colo./Monarch) went 2-for-4 with an RBI. The two combined for five of CSM's six hits. Senior Kim Kilmer (Stoneham, Colo./Prairie) took the loss for Mines and slipped to 4-8. She allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits and fanned two. Mines (19-21, 8-16 RMAC) will return to action on Saturday when it hosts New Mexico Highlands at CSM Field for an RMAC doubleheader. The first game is slated for 12:00 pm. -- OREDIGGERS -- | |
