MINES SOFTBALL DROPS TWO AT FORT LEWIS

DURANGO, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines softball team dropped a pair of games to Fort Lewis in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Aspen Field. CSM lost the opener, 2-1, and dropped the finale, 2-1, in nine innings.

Sunday's scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to snow and rain and will not be made up.

In game one, Fort Lewis scored a run in the second and another in the third to claim a 2-0 lead. Mines (8-6, 3-5 RMAC) plated a run in the sixth on an RBI single from freshman Rissa Laubhan (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley), but the squad could not muster the tying run.

Senior Melanie Mahoney (Erie, Colo./Colorado State) took the loss as she allowed five hits and two runs (one earned) in six innings. Cassidy Maine (5-5) picked up the win as she went the distance, allowing one run on five hits and struck out seven.

In the nightcap, Mines grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Mahoney delivered an RBI single. She finished game two 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Skyhawks (9-13, 3-7 RMAC) managed to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh with an unearned run and won the game in the ninth when Liz Tarnowski registered an RBI single. That run was also unearned.

Mahoney (6-4) took the loss as she went 8 1/3 innings. She gave up just six hits and struck out four as both runs scored were unearned. Lauren Bails improved to 3-5 for FLC as she fired a complete game, four hitter and fanned six.

Mines will return to action from Mar. 21-24 when it plays nine games in Tucson, Ariz., over Spring Break.
