MINES SOFTBALL SQUAD SPLITS TWO WITH HIGHLANDS GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines softball team split two games with New Mexico Highlands in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Sunday morning at CSM Field. CSM took the opener, 10-5, but dropped the series finale, 3-2. NMHU (19-21, 16-15 RMAC) wound up taking three of the four games in the weekend series. In today's twinbill, CSM freshman second baseman Melissa Stratton (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) went a combined 4-for-8 with three runs scored. The Orediggers pounded out 16 hits in the win and were led by freshman shortstop Stacie LaRocque (Erie, Colo./Monarch) who was 4-for-4 with a run and two runs batted in. Senior rightfielder Melanie Mahoney (Erie, Colo./Colorado State) and sophomore third baseman Brianne Brennan (Grand Junction, Colo./Central) both had three hits and an RBI in game one. Freshman Danika Johnson (Westminster, Colo./Standley Lake) earned the win in game one and moved to 3-1 this year. She pitched five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and fanned two. Mahoney worked the final two innings to pick up her third save of the season. Senior Kim Kilmer (Stoneham, Colo./Prairie) took the loss in relief in game two and fell to 4-10. Keri Evans (10-8) threw a complete game, six hitter in the finale to pick up the win for the Cowgirls, while Lynette Hicks dropped to 9-11 as she took the loss in game one. CSM (20-24, 9-19 RMAC) will conclude its season with a pair of RMAC doubleheaders against Mesa State next weekend at CSM Field.
