MINES SOFTBALL GOES 1-1 IN PHOENIX

PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Colorado School of Mines softball team posted a 1-1 record at the 2005 Lone Star Conference/Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Crossover Tournament last weekend. CSM was slated to play five total games, but lost three games due to heavy rain in the area.

The Orediggers (1-1) lost their opening game to Angelo State, the defending national champions, 7-1, and defeated St. Edward's, 6-0, in their other game.

In the opener, CSM took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI sacrifice fly from senior designated player Melanie Mahoney (Erie, Colo./Colorado State). However, Angelo State plated three runs in the fourth and three more in the seventh to claim the win.

In the win over the Hilltoppers, Mahoney threw a complete-game, five hitter and struck out one to win her first outing of the season. The Orediggers scored one in the second and five more in the third, highlighted by a two-run single from junior leftfielder Brittany McKenzie (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo South).

Mines will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Colorado College for a nonconference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
