MINES SOFTBALL DROPS PAIR TO REGIS

DENVER, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines softball team dropped a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games to Regis University on Wednesday afternoon at Regis Field. The Rangers won the opener, 4-0, and took the nightcap, 9-1, in five innings.

In game one, the Rangers plated a run apiece in the first and fifth innings and two in the second to claim the win.

Senior Melanie Mahoney (Erie, Colo./Colorado State) took the loss for Mines and fell to 11-7. She went all six innings, allowing just five hits and struck out three. Nicole Breeding earned the win for the Rangers as she fired a complete-game, four hitter and fanned four.

Sharita Richmond and Mariah Piper each drove in two runs for Regis (23-6, 19-2 RMAC) in game one.

In the nightcap, Regis received first inning homers from Melissa Backlund and Piper to race out to a 5-0 lead. Backlund finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI.

Mahoney went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Mines. Senior Kim Kilmer (Stoneham, Colo./Prairie) lasted two innings for the Orediggers and took the loss (4-5), while Kaitlyn Gentert earned the win for Regis and moved to 12-4 on the year.

CSM (17-13, 6-8 RMAC) will return to action this weekend when it plays a four-game RMAC series at RMAC preseason favorite CU-Colorado Springs. The first doubleheader is slated for Saturday at 12:00 pm.
