DIRECTOR
of ATHLETICS
Tom Spicer begins his fifth year as the Director of Athletics
at Colorado School of Mines in 2008-09. He began his appointment at CSM
on May 13, 2004, after spending 15 years in the same capacity at Fort
Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. Spicer played an instrumental role in the development of the CSM Student Recreation Center, which opened in 2007-08 and serves as the home for the Oredigger volleyball, basketball and swimming & diving teams. The CSM Softball Field, as well as the Jim Darden Baseball Field, have also undergone extensive renovations during Spicer's administration. In June of 2008, the Clear Creek Project commenced at CSM. The Clear Creek Project is a three-phase initiative to develop, expand and upgrade the facilities of CSM Athletics. Phase 1 includes a new soccer stadium and a new track & field facility, Phase 2 is a new 200-space parking lot northwest of Brooks Field and Phase 3 is the replacement of Brooks Field with a new football complex. At Fort Hays, Spicer presided over two national championship teams, including the 1990-91 womens basketball title and the 1995-96 mens basketball championship. In 2000, the Tiger baseball team earned World Series runner-up honors, as well. Spicers fund-raising efforts were largely responsible for improvements that were made to Lewis Field Stadium, the home of the Fort Hays State University football team. Through his efforts, the stadium was renovated with new synthetic surfaces on both the football field and track and a new two-story press box was constructed at the stadium. A native of Beaver, Oklahoma, Spicer earned a bachelor of science degree from Fort Hays State in 1972 and played on the varsity football team for the Tigers during his undergraduate career. He also received his master of science degree from FHSU in 1977. Spicer has also been the Director of Athletics and Director of Student Affairs at Butler County Community College and has experience as the Director of Athletics, physical education instructor, head football coach and track coach for the Durant, Oklahoma, School District. He also coached wrestling, football, track & field and baseball at Bishop Miege and F.L. Schlagle High Schools. Spicer and his wife, the former Kathy McGovern, have three daughters (Amber, Kristen and Allison) and a son (Matt). |
