The 2004-05 season will be Steve Wimberlys seventh year as the
head coach of Colorado School of Mines mens tennis program. A Baldwin
Hills, Calif., native, Wimberly has coached several different players
at several different levels.
Last season, Wimberly guided Mines to its third RMAC Championship during
his tenure and sixth straight appearance in the NCAA II Regional Championships
where it was defeated in the opening round. In addition, two players earned
All-RMAC honors under the guidance of Wimberly and Chris Perez was named
the RMAC Freshman of the Year.
Three seasons ago, Wimberly guided the Orediggers to their best season
in school history. CSM posted a 20-4 overall record and a 5-1 mark in
the RMAC. The squad advanced to the NCAA North Central Regional Tournament
where it defeated third-seeded St. Cloud State, 5-0, and top-seeded and
host Rockhurst, 5-3. The Orediggers fell in the first round of the NCAA
Division II National Tournament, 5-0, to Hawaii Pacific. Six Orediggers
were honores as all-conference that season.
Wimberly was honored as the 2000 RMAC Coach of the Year after he led the
Orediggers to an overall record of 20-10, including a perfect 6-0 in the
conference, and the RMAC Championship. Eight CSM players earned all-conference
accolades that season.
