2002 Track and Field Releases


January 12th

The Colorado School of Mines track and field team opened up their 2002 indoor track season led by Mike Sharkey, a Junior from Colorado Springs. Mike ran a personal best in the mile with a time of 4:21.74. The time was good enough for a second place finish and also meets the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard. Other notable performances included runner up finishes for Senior Ben Lengerich (800 Meters - 1:54.65), Freshman Jimmy Hargrove (Shot Put - 47'6.25"), the Men's Mile Relay (Brandon Desh, Matt Walsh, Chris Schaumberg, and Lengerich - 3:22.89) and Sophomore Randi Crowder (High Jump - 5'3"). Matt Walsh and Meg Schissler also performed well, finishing third in the 800 and fourth in the Mile respectively.



February 12th

The Colorado School of Mines traveled with five athletes to the University of Butler for the Cannon IV Classic on the weekend of February 8 and 9, 2002. Junior miler Mike Sharkey started things off with a personal record in the mile of 4:15.94 nad a 21st plase finish (56 competitors). In the 800 meter run, senior Ben Lengerich and sophomore Matt Walsh both made the NCAA Division II qualifying standard with times of 1:52.24 and 1:52.79 respectively good enough for 7th and 12th place finishes (57 competitors). Lengerich and Walsh are currently ranked 6th and 9th in NCAA II. FInally the 4X400 meter relay team of sophomore Eamonn Gardner, freshman Chris Schaumberg, Walsh, and Lengerich also met the NCAA II qualifying standard with a time of 3:15.88. The time was good enough for a 3rd place finish (14 teams) and currently ranks them 4th in NCAA II. Overall, it was an outstanding weekend for the Mines tracksters.



March 14

Four members of the Mines track and field team traveled to Boston for the NCAA II Indoor National Track and Field Championships. Senior Ben Lengerich and sophomore Matt Walsh competed in the 800 Meters and teamed with sophomore Eamonn Gardner and freshman Chris Schaumberg on the 4x400 meter relay. Each member of the relay team earned All-American honors for their 8th plach finish. In the 800, Walsh finished in the 10th position while Lengerich added to his All-American accolades with a new school record (1:51.28) and a 3rd place finish.


April 24

Three members of the Colorado School of Mines track and field team traveled to Walnut California for the Mt. SAC Relays on April 19-21. Matt Walsh started things off in the 800 meters with a new school record and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:50.60, breaking the previous record held by the injured Jared Peacock (1:50.85). In the next heat of the 800, senior Ben Lengerich broke Matt's newly established school record with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of his own, 1:50.37. Not to be outdone, Mike Sharkey also broke a school record and made the NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:51.50. Overall it was an outstanding performance for the Mines tracksters, 3 athletes, 3 school records, 3 NCAA qualifiers.
